Brushes

When it comes to choosing brushes, it is true that 'you get what you pay for'!  If you are trying hard to perfect strokework and techniques, it really does make a difference what type of brush you use and in particular the quality of the brush.  If you look after your brushes, they can give you years of service, therefore it is well worth the investment.  I have listed below explanations of the different types of brushes and what they are used for and I am pleased to say that I can offer for sale a variety of well known ranges that I use on a day-to-day basis and can wholeheartedly recommend.  Although, please do get in touch if you have any queries.

To assist you in your choices, please find below a brief description of the different types most commonly used;

Flat

A square-shaped head most commonly used for basecoating, blocking in colour and 'C' and 'S' strokes.  Can also be used for shading/floating colour.

Angular/Shader

Often prefered for shading/floating colour because of it's angled shape.

Round

The most popular brush for creating the 'comma' stroke, most often used in traditional decorative painting.

Liner

A much finer version of the Round brush used for fine lines, cross hatching, words and any fine detail required.

Deerfoot Stippler

This unusual shaped brush is perfect for stippling and creating a soft blended effect.  Great for snow, tree foliage and teddy bears!

Filbert

This brush is similar to the Flat brush but has rounded edges.  The larger version is sometimes preferred for basecoating, whilst the smaller types can create lovely small petals.

Note : Some brush manufacturers/artists produce brushes for specific techniques and these are often easier to use.  For example, this applies specifically to some types of Jo Sonja brushes which have been created for the Creative Possibilities programme.
